Accents
I remember like it was yesterday, the time when I discovered that I was going to move to São Paulo, to live alone for the very first time and experience a whole new city, its customs, places, and of course, its accent. At that time I started to learn a different accent from my own – from my city of birth – in order to arrive in São Paulo trying to look as little as possible as someone who was not from “there”. And then I begun to learn what I believed was the paulistan accent of São Paulo.
Unknowingly I was learning the Mineiros accent spoken in Belo Horizonte. So, it was all in vain, and I only really got used to the São Paulo accent years later.
Visiting websites and blogs of people who had the experience of moving to Canada, I found this in particular; a special video from a girl that I am presenting here now:
“21 Accents” is a video in which the young girl Amy Walker taught how to learn any of the main accents in the world – or at least what she believes to be the most important! It is worth a look, and visit her channel on Youtube for more videos. 😀

Lembro-me como se fosse hoje do dia em que descobri que eu iria me mudar para São Paulo, passar a viver sozinho e conhecer toda uma nova cidade, seus costumes, lugares e claro, seu sotaque. Naquele tempo comecei a treinar um sotaque diferente do meu, da minha cidade de nascença, para poder chegar em São Paulo tentando parecer o mínimo possível alguém que fosse “dali”. E assim, treinei o que acreditava ser o sotaque paulistano, mal sabendo que no fim eu acabei treinando foi como os Mineiros de Belo Horizonte falavam. Ou seja, foi tudo em vão e só me acostumei realmente com o sotaque de São Paulo anos depois.
Passeando por sites e blogs de pessoas que tiveram a experiência de se mudar para o Canadá, encontrei esse em especial, no qual uma garota postou exatamente esse mesmo vídeo que estou aqui apresentando agora.
“21 Accents” é um vídeo em que a jovem moça Amy Walker fez, ensinando como aprender qualquer um dos principais sotaque do Mundo – ou ao menos o que ela acredita serem os mais importantes! – Vale a pena dar uma conferida e visitar o canal dela no Youtube com mais vídeos. :D
That’s very nice. I cam imagine you training your accent before you move to SP and in my toughts it is really funny! haha
But ok, you’ll learn the canadian accent and, as I know you, will speak it perfectly.
